John Curtis Holmes' Birthday

For those who may not be directly acquainted with the porno industry but who are film fans, you may know John C. Holmes from portrayals of him by Mark Wahlberg in a slightly fictionalized version of him in Boogie Nights (1997), or by Val Kilmer who played him in Wonderland (2003) or, if you are a recent college student, viewing Wadd: The Life & Times of John C. Holmes, a 1998 documentary that has achieved cult status among some independent film houses in college towns. Richard Corliss of Time Magazine said of Wadd: "Like Holmes, Wadd is seedy, twisted, a bit on the long side--and creepily fascinating." (Johnny Wadd is one of  Holmes' film names based the lead character in a series of related films.)

Johnny was noted for the size of his penis and erection maintenance, although there were no accurate measurements ever taken. Most of his costars were short, slender women which may have made the size of his penis appear relatively larger than it was. It is somewhat ironic that when Johnny had the first signs of what we now know know as erectile dysfunction, he began to go door-to-door collecting donations for the Save the Whales and was one of their more successful fundraisers.

Johnny reportedly made more than 2,500 porno films during the 1970s and 1980s, and, according to pornography historian (a possible profession for recent college graduates who may have difficulty finding employment) Luke Ford, Johnny may have had  more than 3000 sexual partners over the course of his lifetime - a frightening statistic since Johnny died of AIDS.

Of greater significance may be Johnny's connection to the infamous Wonderland murders that took place  in Los Angeles in 1981, when four members of the notorious  Wonderland gang were killed in a drug-related scenario allegedly masterminded by Los Angeles drug dealer Eddie Nash after the gang robbed him. Holmes was allegedly present during the murders, but there was no hard (so to speak) evidence he participated in the killings. In March 1982, Johnny was charged with personally committing all four murders,  Hewas subsequently acquitted of all murder charges. The film Wonderland was based on these murders.

So to celebrate Johnny's birthday, we recommended watching Wadd: The Life & Times of John C. Holmes  and making a batch of Woodcock Pâté.  Woodcocks are game birds, Scolopax rusticola, resembling the snipe but larger and having shorter legs and neck.
