Fred Durst was born on
August 20, 1970, in Jacksonville, Florida. After a failed stint in Navy
boot camp and a brief career as a tattoo artist, Durst formed Limp
Bizkit.
Limp Bizkit’s debut
album, Three Dollar Bill Y’all, dropped in 1995. The lead single,
a grungy cover of George Michael’s “Faith,” was a mid-nineties MTV
staple, featuring heavy rotation in the early seasons of Total
Request Live. The band enjoyed considerable commercial success
throughout the mid to late nineties, and served as a flagship band for
the Nu-metal genre that fused elements of rock, metal and rap into the
latest music despised by parents everywhere.
Durst’s particular
brand of brash showmanship and propensity to urge his listeners to wreck
property made him a magnet for controversy and outcry from god-fearing
lovers of peace and order. In particular, the disastrous comeback of
Woodstock in 1999, which culminated in a frenzy of violence and
destruction, was frequently blamed on Bizkit’s set, which included their
hit “Break Stuff.” The fans took the lyrics quite literally. At another
performance, a teenage concertgoer was crushed to death by the rowdy
crowd.
Durst’s personal life
has also been the subject of some media attention, including a sex tape
that nobody wanted to see because he wasn’t a blonde heiress. He also
had alleged relationships with both Christina Aguilera and Brittney
Spears, firmly cementing him as a relic of the 90s. He also has a habit
of getting into beefs with other musicians, including Creed's Scott
Stapp, Eminem, and a non-fight with fellow nu-metal royalty Corey Taylor
of Slipknot.
We originally planned
to celebrate the birthday of Nu-Metal’s crown prince by suggesting a
recipe for the namesake for Durst’s misspelled band, Limp Biscuit, which
is a slang reference to a British boys’ school game that is best left to
the reader’s own research. But the culinary connotation to the game was
so disgusting, we decided to opt for the eponymously named cocktail
instead. Although Fred is now a big time film director, for his birthday
film we recommend watching his portrayal of the dimwitted meth dealer in
Play Dead (2009).
