After graduating from an all-girls Catholic high school, Elisabeth Filarski
attended Boston College and
married her college boyfriend, former professional football quarterback Tim
Hasselbeck. Her television career was launched in
2001 on the second season of CBS’s
Survivor: The Australian Outback,
as a member of the Kucha tribe.
She was the last remaining member of that tribe in the game before being
voted off on Day 39. Unlike the
rest of Survivor’s castaways, Elisabeth’s star continued to sparkle. After Survivor she hosted the Miss Teen America pageant and then
served as the host of The Look for Less. Elisabeth is best known as
the ultra-conservative co-host on ABC’s The View. Many of Elisabeth’s opinions and more outspoken moments on
The View have put her at odds with her more left-leaning co-hosts. Since she began in 2006,
Elisabeth has spoken out against the FDA’s plan to sell Plan B (the morning
-after
pill) as an over-the-counter drug She argued heatedly with then co-host
Rosie O’Donnell over support of the war in Iraq. She occasionally gets
Whoopi's goat when the topics of abortion and race relations are raised. She
clashed with Joy Behar when she criticized White House Press Secretary
Robert Gibbs for jokingly writing crib notes on his hand like Sarah Palin
had during a speech at a recent Tea Party meeting, stating "If the Press
Secretary is up there being a mouthpiece for the White House during a time
of crisis like we've been in for so long, don't make a joke and write on
your hand," Joy glared at her and responded, "During the Bush
administration, when boys were getting killed, people were making jokes in
the White House, so don't give me this crap, Elisabeth."
Elizabeth has celiac disease, a disorder of
the small intestine, and has raised national awareness of this disease . The only effective
treatment for celiac disease is a life-long gluten-free diet.which prompted her to write a
gluten-free cookbook called The G-Free Diet.
Elisabeth insists that she
is politically moderate. However, her multiple appearances at Republican
rallies in 2008 introducing then-Vice Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin seem
to contradict her alleged political leanings. The morning after Barack Obama
won the election, Elisabeth appeared on The View in funereal attire.
So, what do you prepare for
a Kucha tribe Republican cheerleader with gluten
challenges on her birthday? An
appropriate recipe might be Right Wing Chicken while you watch her in
Madea Goes to Jail (2009) which is where most of the other members
of the Kucha tribe belong.
